Food Poisoning is a disease carried by germs, which are produced when a Duplicant uses an Outhouse, a Lavatory or makes a mess.

Food Poisoning germs multiply on Polluted Water and Edible items, survive in Polluted Dirt and Genetic Ooze, and die on everything else or when on an Item or Building surrounded by Chlorine. The game says their temperature range is -25 °C to 75 °C (167 °F), but they'll start dying when temperatures reach 0°C and below, or 40°C and above. Temperatures outside this range will further accelerate the germ's death.

Sources[ | ]

Each use of an Outhouse or Lavatory will produce Food Poisoning germs. These germs are divided among the Duplicant, Polluted Dirt/Polluted Water, and the building itself.

A Polluted Water Vent produces Polluted Water with an extremely high concentration of Food Poisoning germs.

Mush Bars are produced with 1000 Food Poisoning germs even if the ingredients were free of germs.

When Duplicants interact with buildings (including ladders) and items, germs will be exchanged and spread.

Infection[ | ]

Duplicants are infected by Food Poisoning germs when they eat Food, drink from Water Cooler, Espresso Machine, Juicer, or Soda Fountain.

Note that Food Poisoning germs may appear in Oxygen produced by the Electrolyzer. However, unlike with Slimelung, Food Poisoning cannot infect through air.

Effects[ | ]

  • Bladder Change +200%/cycle
  • Bathroom Use Speed -20%
  • Stamina -30%/cycle

Duration: 1.7 Cycles

Mitigation[ | ]

The spread of Food Poisoning can be mitigated by using Wash Basins and Sinks.

For Microbe Musher, Water Cooler, Espresso Machine, Juicer and Soda Fountain the supplied Water should be clear of Food Poisoning germs.

The Electric Grill and Gas Range kill all germs on food items after they are cooked, but a Sink should still be placed at the access point to the kitchen, since some germs from the raw food can be transferred to the Cook and then from the cook back to the finished food item.

Duplicants with the Iron Gut trait are immune to Food Poisoning.

Treatment[ | ]

Duplicants with Food Poisoning can be cured by consuming a Curative Tablet, made in Apothecary from 1 kg of Coal and 1 kg of Water. Once administered, it will completely cure the duplicant, who'll then have antibodies against the disease in their system for 1.5 cycles.

Tips[ | ]

  • Intentional Food Poisoning infection can help squeeze some additional Water from dupes on water-poor maps with modest penalties to productivity, but don't forget to double sanitary hours.

History[ | ]

  • Food Poisoning was severely nerfed at some point, removing vomiting and decreasing penalties.
